When U Are a Malaysian Living in Europe

U can't help but be confused for awhile of the driving system and walking system.
And U'll be confused even more when U want to cross the roads.
I haven't gotten over the unfamiliarity even if I've been here for about 9 months.
Occassionally, when I cross the road, I'll look to my right when I'm supposed to look to my left.
Thanks a lot to the efficient zebra crossing here, I've been spared a bed in hospital or even my life.

But when I went to Scotland, I was a bit confused again even the system there is the same like in Malaysia.
Having been into a bus where the driver is on the left side, I found it a bit clumsy when the driver in Scotland is on the right side.

And the most recent incident is the most embarassing one.
When we finished loading our things into the van, all my friends ran for backseat.
And so I headed for the front one.
And guess what?
I opened the left side door.
And was shocked to find that is the driver's seat.
LOL.
That was really embarassing what with the driver was there also.
*red face*
With numb face, I went to my righteous seat.
Panas2.

SĪ VIS PĀCEM, PARĀ BELLUM!

If you want peace prepare for the war.
I have 11 days (if I still cling to my booked date) to study 85 slides and less than 150 questions
this is microscopic view of matured placenta

and there's this saying from anatomy department website
"The older lecturers say: When chestnut trees blossom, be preparing for anatomical final exam"
yah2, I've been preparing for anatomy twice every week all year long.

I doubt myself if I can make it through, this June and early July.
But then, asking whoever, everybody would feel that they are not ready.
And I came into this conclusion.
If we don't take the risk, we'll be not ready forever.
Creepy?Cold sweat?
Yes.Yes. Except the butterfly isn't in m stomach yet.
But I know, I need to have confidence in myself.
And I have confidence in Allah.
I want to make it through.

My First Summer

Literally. (coz it's always summer back home =))
Well, 4 credit tests greet me into my first summer.
They r 4 if I do pass all of them.
If not it would be more than 4.
Credit = ticket for final examination
Final examination?
Sadly, the whole June is final examination period.
Yeah, I only will have final on 2 days (again, if I do pass both.if not, repeat!I say, repeat!)
But seeing the list of questions, 1 month should be enough if I do nothing except study 24/7
199 questions for anatomy and 103 questions for histology and any 3 of 85 slides (I repeat, 85 slides) to be examined.
All ORALLY.

Hakuna matata.
Saya boleh.
Malaysia boleh. (cikgu BM saya kata frasa ni salah, should be Malaysia dapat)
Kami boleh.Alhamdulillah, I'm done with Latin.
Just need to collect my credit for Biology
And can't wait to collect the credit for histology and anatomy so that I can book the dates.
I'll be a busy bee this June.

But, hakuna matata again.
I love it when I'm occupied.

Sometime, I'm so optimistic.
Seeing that my seniors passed their 1st year.
Sometime, I get goosebump.
Because the fact that we can't figure out what is ahead.
Since I'm in Czech, I've begin to believe in rezeki (but still believing in effort though)
Will my path be smooth or rough?

Hahaha.
It makes me green with envy thinking that some people is packing their bags for home
Some even in their home right now (I mean home with your biological family)
Photo from Uniq.

And I'm here, still don't know the dates for my final examination.

Whatever.
It part and parcel of life.
I'd better live my life.
And prepare for battle.
Hakuna matata
Lina dapat!!!

Success

Jika ingin berjaya di dunia,
Islam seIslam-Islamnya
atau Kafir sekafir-kafirnya

Tapi ingat,
Islam seIslam-Islamnya bukan sekadar berjaya di dunia
tetapi juga di akhirat

Juga sekiranya hanya mengejar dunia
Akhirat akan terlepas
Sekiranya mengejar akhirat
Insyaallah dunia dan ahirat are in our possession

Oculocardiac Reflex

Oculo = mata
Cardiac = jantung
Oculocardiac reflex = refleks mata ke jantung.
The first thing that cross my precious mind when I heard this term is fenomena dari mata turun ke hati.
Do u get my drift?
Oklah.
Org kan selalu kata dari mata turun ke hati selain dari ayat tak kenal maka tak cinta.
Back then I really thought that dari mata turun ke hati is explained as oculocardiac reflex from neurology point of view.
because when the cupid arrow strike, and your eye caught the sight of your crush, your heartbeat suddenly turn from kelajuan semasa di jalan kampung to kelajuan semasa di highway PLUS

Via here
But no.

The oculocardiac reflex, also known as Aschner phenomenon, Aschner reflex, or Aschner-Dagnini reflex, is a decrease in pulse rate associated with traction applied to extraocular muscles and/or compression of the eyeball. The reflex is mediated by nerve connections between the trigeminal cranial nerve and the vagus nerve of the parasympathetic nervous system. The afferent tracts are derived mainly from the ophthalmic division of the trigeminal nerve, although tracts from the maxillary and mandibular division have also been documented. These afferents synapse with the visceral motor nucleus of the vagus nerve, located in the reticular formation of the brain stem. The efferent portion is carried by the vagus nerve from the cardiovascular center of the medulla to the heart, of which increased stimulation leads to decreased output of the sinoatrial node. This reflex is especially sensitive in neonates and children, and must be monitored, usually by an anaesthesiologist, during paediatric ophthalmological surgery, particularly during strabismus correction surgery[3]. However, this reflex may also occur with adults. Bradycardia, junctional rhythm, asystole, and very rarely death [4], can be induced through this reflex.
Dipetik dari Wikipedia

So that explains dari mata turun ke hati is not oculocardiac reflex.
However, the interesting part is, when u press your eyeball.
You'll activated your parasympatetic function.
Means, u lower your pulse which leads to decrease in blood pressure and increase secretion of digestive enzymes and juices.
In my point of view (in case, don't try/apply this because I'm not sure myself) it's useful for ppl who suffer from darah tinggi(hypertension) and darah gemuruh
well, some of us usually have panic attacks, in which the heart beat so fast
So, by pressing the eyeball, it can help reduce the heart rate
However , I don't think girls on diet like this.
By pressing the eye, the digestive system is prepared to work = drive to eat
not good huh?

Conclusion : learning medic is way fun than I thought. U r somehow aware of your emotion, physiological, or physical changes.
Aha, and if u hate your weight, don't only blame the fat. Blame the skin too. It's the heaviest organ.

New Home

Finally, hard work paid for me.
Found an apartment at last.
Bonuses are there is balcony an the landlord is ordering us whole new furnitures.
Even though we need to share the bedroom, it's compensate with having all 4 under the same roof.
And unexpectedly also coming with the package is Assoc. Prof Dasa Slizova living few floors above us.
She even offered to 'control' us *run!!!!eh no, lock door!hehehehe*

In these nearly 8 years, moving in and out has been a regular thing for me.
However, I must say that this time, it's quite something to look forward to.
Honestly, in my life, it never crossed my mind that I'll be living in a rented space/apartment/house
My family lives in our own home and other places that I used to live in you can say that is supported.
Meaning, the rent and etcetera is taken care by my guardian, government etc.

I love learning new things.
Somehow, I feel that since I signed the agreement, another thing is in my control.
To gain control over anything for me is a hard job.
It is responsibility.
I wonder how would it be next.
The monthly payment.
The saving of water and energy (which I usually ignore because hey, someone is paying for me)
The prospect of managing a home.
The experience of living separately from people from my country.
And the first to come is moving out!
Yeah, things like packing up and leave.
And unpacking.
With final examinations around the corner.
Vauw!!!!

I'm looking forward to this next phase.
Wish that things run smoothly.

The Bitter Truth of Life

If I want something, I would put effort into getting it.
And people I hate the most is who get in my way and simply take the result of it.
What I get from my effort = 0
Yeah, I'm fully aware that most of my effort is fruitful.
But by having it to yourself isn't the right way to show your compliment
Really, don't pull such a dirty trick ok.
I'm totally pissed off.

Wearing Hijab

Why She Won't Wear Hijab!
A Discussion by A.Q. Alidost

A conversation for Muslim sisters:

"I'm so tired."

"Tired of what?"

"Of all these people judging me."

"Who judged you?"

"Like that woman, every time I sit with her, she tells me to wear hijab."

"Oh, hijab and music! The mother of all topics!"

"Yeah! I listen to music without hijab... haha!"

"Maybe she was just giving you advice."

"I don't need her advice. I know my religion. Can't she mind her own business?"

"Maybe you misunderstood. She was just being nice."

"Keeping out of my business, that would be nice..."

"But it's her duty to encourage you do to good."

"Trust me. That was no encouragement. And what do you mean 'good'?"

"Well, wearing hijab, that would be a good thing to do."

"Says who?"

"It's in the Quran, isn't it?"

"Yes. She did quote me something."

"She said Surah Nur, and other places of the Quran."

"Yes, but it's not a big sin anyway. Helping people and praying is more important."

"True. But big things start with small things."

"That's a good point, but what you wear is not important. What's important is to have a good healthy heart."

"What you wear is not important?"

"That's what I said."

"Then why do you spend an hour every morning fixing up?"

"What do you mean?"

"You spend money on cosmetics, not to mention all the time you spend on fixing your hair and low-carb dieting."

"So?"

"So, your appearance IS important."

"No. I said wearing hijab is not an important thing in religion."

"If it's not an important thing in religion, why is it mentioned in the Noble Quran?"

"You know I can't follow all that's in Quran."

"You mean God tells you something to do, you disobey and then it's OK?"

"Yes. God is forgiving."

"God is forgiving to those who repent and do not repeat their mistakes."

"Says who?"

"Says the same book that tells you to cover."

"But I don't like hijab, it limits my freedom."

"But the lotions, lipsticks, mascara and other cosmetics set you free?!
What's your definition of freedom anyway?"

"Freedom is in doing whatever you like to do."

"No. Freedom is in doing the right thing, not in doing whatever we wish to do."

"Look! I've seen so many people who don't wear hijab and are nice people, and so many who wear hijab and are bad people."

"So what? There are people who are nice to you but are alcoholic. Should we all be alcoholics? You made a stupid point."

"I don't want to be an extremist or a fanatic. I'm OK the way I am without hijab."

"Then you are a secular fanatic. An extremist in disobeying God."

"You don't get it, if I wear hijab, who would marry me?!"

"So all these people with hijab never get married?!"

"Okay! What if I get married and my husband doesn't like it? And wants me to remove it?"

"What if your husband wants you to go out with him on a bank robbery?!"

"That's irrelevant, bank robbery is a crime."

"Disobeying your Creator is not a crime?"

"But then who would hire me?"

"A company that respects people for who they are."

"Not after 9-11"

Yes. After 9-11. Don't you know about Hanan who just got into med school?
And the other one, what was her name, the girl who always wore a white hijab... ummm..."

"Yasmin?"

"Yes. Yasmin. She just finished her MBA and is now interning for GE."

"Why do you reduce religion to a piece of cloth anyway?"

"Why do you reduce womanhood to high heals and lipstick colors?"

"You didn't answer my question."

"In fact, I did. Hijab is not just a piece of cloth. It is obeying God in a difficult environment. It is courage, faith in action, and true womanhood.
But your short sleeves, tight pants..."

"That's called 'fashion', you live in a cave or something? First of all, hijab was founded by men who wanted to control women."

"Really? I did not know men could control women by hijab."

"Yes. That's what it is."

"What about the women who fight their husbands to wear hijab? And women in France who are forced to remove their hijab by men? What do you say about that?"

"Well, that's different."

"What difference? The woman who asked you to wear hijab... she was a woman, right?"

"Right, but..."

"But fashions that are designed and promoted by male-dominated corporations, set you free? Men have no control on exposing women and using them as a commodity?! Give me a break!"

"Wait, let me finish, I was saying..."

"Saying what? You think that men control women by hijab?"

"Yes."

"Specifically how?"

"By telling women how and what to wear, dummy!"

"Doesn't TV, magazines and movies tell you what to wear, and how to be 'attractive'?"

"Of course, it's fashion."

"Isn't that control? Pressuring you to wear what they want you to wear?"

[Silence]

"Not just controlling you, but also controlling the market."

"What do you mean?"

"I mean, you are told to look skinny and anorexic like that woman on the cover of the magazine, by men who design those magazines and sell those products."

"I don't get it. What does hijab have to do with products."

"It has everything to do with that. Don't you see? Hijab is a threat to consumerism, women who spend billions of dollars to look skinny and live by standards of fashion designed by men... and then here is Islam, saying trash all that nonsense and focus on your soul, not on your looks, and do not worry what men think of your looks."

"Like I don't have to buy hijab? Isn't hijab a product?"

"Yes, it is. It is a product that sets you free from male-dominated consumerism."

"Stop lecturing me! I WILL NOT WEAR HIJAB!

It is awkward, outdated, and totally not suitable for this society... Moreover, I am only 20 and too young to wear hijab!"

"Fine. Say that to your Lord, when you face Him on Judgment Day."

"Fine."

"Fine."

[Silence]

"Shut up and I don't want to hear more about hijab niqab schmijab Punjab!"

[Silence]

She stared at the mirror, tired of arguing with herself all this time.

Successful enough, she managed to shut the voices in her head, with her own opinions triumphant in victory on the matter, and a final modern decision accepted by the society - but rejected by the Faith:

"Yes!" - to curls on the hair - "No!" - to hijab!

"And he (/she) is indeed a failure who corrupts it [the soul]!" [Noble Quran 91:10]

Subhana'Allah!!!

"Nay! You prefer the life of this world; While the hereafter is better and more lasting." [Noble Quran 87:16-17]

"You are the best community (Ummah) raised up for (the benefit of) humanity; enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong and believing in Allah." [Noble Quran 3:110]

Excerpt from Islamswomen.com

p/s : I'm sure this doesn't need any more elaboration
btw, the website is a real inspiring place.
what's more it doesn't only answer our (us, Muslim women) questions. It also answer those outside the Islam questions.

Potrebuju Byt

Ok, I think this is the umpteenth time I've gone thru the umpteenth apartments ads
You see, I don't have so much free time to browse again and again
But I need to move out from this place before the final examination month

No,no,no
It's totally not a good idea to stay in Palachova this June
What's with skipped meals and hundreds of question to be revised
I'm sure everyone will have PMS even it's not their time of the month
And the ever lousy plumbing system will add more fuel to the fire

So, Marcella has found 2 apartments, which I hope meet our endless requirements
Owh yes, in this case, Marcellan and Lida are both working up to their job description
About Petra, I don't think she is interested in her job

Nevertheless, I gained so much experience
Maybe I'll add properties agent in my resume
and not to mention, now I get it why Malaysia is in it current state nowadays
In a community, different people have different requirement
Some people choose to live glamorously
Some can make do with anything regular
And some people prefer to live on a budget
Some people splurge too much
Some people spend moderately'
While some people stack their money in bank and live on other's

And unfortunately, there are so much different points to be filled in the column
compared to similar points
So, I'm here, confused and angry at myself, because I don't know how to share a common view with others

Other things that I learned,
In life, U can't get all the things you want
In order to receive, U must give
Generally, in Hradec Kralove, it's hard to find a 4 rooms apartment
3 rooms apartments exist but with a limited number
2 rooms are plenty
whilst 1 room is possible

Also to be taken into consideration, finding a furnished house
which the availability corresponds to the facts mentioned above

That's all rambling from me.
Yours truly.

A Fond Memory

They say some happy memories last forever.
In anatomy, limbic system is in charge of storing happy memories and shut away the most painful ones.

Today, I get my Latin final result.
It's very good.
Not excellent as I hope it to be.

The fond memory is not getting excellent nor passing the subject.
But it is my Latin lecturer.

My Latin lecturer, is a man that I love to describe as Harley man.
His wardrobe is striking red winter coat in winter.
Paired with harley davidson booties and tuck in amon amarath black t-shirt.
In sunny day in spring, the wardrobe consists of brown knee length pant and green tie dyed t-shirt.
Very unique.
With his pair of glasses and long hair (sometimes tied, sometimes free, sometimes brushed, sometimes not =])

He is a funny man and loves language
even though he hate English *giggles*
u can repeat the same word to him again and again
and he still don't get it
until you give a lengthy description.

I still remember in winter when he tried to explain to us how to blow your nose
With so much effort he pulled out his crumpled handkerchief of his pocket and casually showed it to the whole class of 10 people.
We of course bursted into laughters.

Also, there's a time when we were writing our weekly Latin test.
Imagine, I was checking my answers and then a loud sound of boiling water followed by the kettle whistling filled the class.
To be followed by steam evaporating from under our table.
That's so hillarious.
Closing the mouth to avoid laughter has never been so hard.

There are so many funny memories to recall but I do enjoy all my Latin classes.
Too bad Latin is only taught in first year.

Today when he was done explaining my result
He gave me perhaps his last joke
"Can you show me on the map where you live?"
I nearly pengsan LOL when he took an atlas from the floor and put in on the table
Atlas+Latin final=no relationship kn?
So I show him Penang.
Yes, my much beloved island.
And the discussion on Latin suddenly turn into discussion about the tropical climate, the 4 months of snow, sipping tea in a tea garden, going to national reserve by boat, about biskut lemau di Malaysia n xpernah lemau di Czech and he offered me if I would like to put some pictures that I love on the board.

Saying goodbye, as always is hard.
It was raining and he wished me great future ahead and put his believe in me that I can do it.
To receive such wishes is an honor.
U don't always get that in this time of your life.
Yeah, people always wish tonnes of that when our spirit is high but we hardly receive one when we are needing it.

To cikgu Nečas Pavel, I had great times in your class.
Thanks for the guide and may u be blessed.

Cuti-Cuti Czech : Kutná Hora

The return train ride from Hradec Kralove-Kutná Hora costs each of us 106CzK.
In Czech, you'll get automatic discount if you travel in group (meaning more than 1 ppl) by train.
We transit at Pardubice and Kolin. (Hradec Kralove-Pardubice-Kolin-Kutná Hora )
Transit=rush to catch the next train =p

We walk from Kutna Hora Hlavni Nadrazi (main station) to Sedlec Ossuary.
What is it?
It is this

To be precise it is a church full of bones.
It is estimated that the collection of bones comes from 400 000 or is it 40 000? deceased.
There used to be 6 pyramids of bones but only 4 are to be seen at present.

The entrance

There are loads and loads of coins in the pyramids area.
I think it's a superstition but I don't ask around about it.

See?

A very exciting way to study bones huh?what say you medic friends?
Coat of arm.

Chandelier.

Somehow, seeing this I realise that after we are dead, we are just nothing.
Only bones.
Your mandible could be made into the chandeliar while your hand bones forms part of the coat of arm and your humerus and femur stacked up to make the pyramid and at the same time your sull is encased in the glass cupboard.
We only clutch to our dear live to make the best out of ourselves.
Btw, with ISIC (International Student Identity Card), we pay less than 50 CzK for the entrance into the ossuary and a big church across the road.
Forgot the name but it's listed as UNESCO World Heritage.

Then we walk for eternity to the town.
I advise you to walk back to Hlavni Nadrzi and take the train to the town instead.
It only cost you 6 CzK.

The entrance to the mine museum is quite dear and we pass it.
The museum and St. Barbara Church are at the same area on top of the hill.
The view from the hill is breathtaking.
I simply love Czech nature (except on snowy days, I'd rather bundled up and sip hot apple drink)

We pay a little more to enter St. Barbara Cathedral.(thanks to ISIC, discount again!)
The xterior is beautiful even with a small construction taking place at the rear of the church.
Inside there is a very big organ (it's for me since it's my first time in a chatedral)
Also there about 10 altars from various era.
They are very big with 2 pictures (1 is very big the other is ordinarily big)
Most of the pictures depicted the life of their respective era.

I see that there are so many churches.
In Czech generally.
However most are turn into muzeum and only preserved.
The Czechs are free thinker.
I think the endless suffering that their previous generation took has taken it toll on their believe.
I really hope that Muslim can use our masjid to the fullest that it'll not turn into a place where people just come and adore the architecture
and its original function ceases.

More about Kutná Hora?
Well, it's really a place worth visiting (day trip in spring from Hradec Kralove I mean)

Plus, the souvenirs are cheaper than in Prague and the wood toys here are more worthy than that of beautiful Prague.
Owh, and buy souvenirs around the town, because it's cheaper and have more variety compared to those around the ossuary.
As for dining, just pack up lunch from home =)
We have pizza but we are sure that those pizza are the instant one that u buy in the supermarket and reheat in microwave oven =(
Stone Fountain

Stone House

Monument in remembrance of people died of plague.
